'Jack fell as he'd have wished,' the Mother said,
And folded up the letter that she'd read.
'The Colonel writes so nicely.' Something broke
In the tired voice that quavered to a choke.
She half looked up. 'We mothers are so proud
Of our dead soldiers.' Then her face was bowed.
Quietly the Brother Officer went out.
He'd told the poor old dear some gallant lies
That she would nourish all her days, no doubt.
For while he coughed and mumbled, her weak eyes
Had shone with gentle triumph, brimmed with joy,
Because he'd been so brave, her glorious boy.
He thought how 'Jack', cold-footed, useless swine,
Had panicked down the trench that night the mine
Went up at Wicked Corner; how he'd tried
To get sent home, and how, at last, he died,
Blown to small bits. And no one seemed to care
Except that lonely woman with white hair.

Hello there, and welcome to Tony Nguyen's place. This was
really a project I had to do in my third period English class,
make an html file and analyze the poem to the left. The guy
I analyzed this poem with this cool dude whom his name is
on the top of mine. Anyway, this is from my sophomore year
at Rancho in Mr. Berger's class (who I might add is one of
the coolest teachers one can ever have. Now do I get an A+?
No, I only got an A. Oh well. Here is a brief overview of
the score my teach' gave us for this page:
Web Design: 10
Who is the speaker: 10
Who is the audience: 7
What is the occasion: 10
What is the central purpose: 10
How is the central purpose achieved: 10
Total: 57/60
You'll notice this site design is identical the Neon site. This
is because technically this is a project, but I also found it
fitting to put this under my Essays section.
No plagarism! That's illegal also! Oh, oops, what am I talking
about, I directly took the poem out of somewhere, yet I can't
remember where. If you know who wrote this poem, I'll be your
best friend, so e-mail
me. |
